A GUIDE FROM BUILT BY DESIGN STUDIO

Your website
redesign checklist.

A redesign should improve how the website works for your business. Use these questions to define the project before deciding on a new look.

Decide what success means

Write down the actions your website should support: a useful inquiry, a purchase, a booking, or access to information. Identify what is currently difficult for customers and what your team spends time correcting. Choose a small number of outcomes you can actually review after launch.

Inventory what you already have

  • List existing pages, their purpose, and the content you intend to keep.
  • Identify pages that bring search visitors, inquiries, or valuable links.
  • Record forms, ordering tools, bookings, downloads, and account integrations.
  • Confirm ownership of the domain, hosting, analytics, and business profiles.
  • Check who has rights to the photographs, copy, fonts, and other assets.

Map the pages and redirects

Give each proposed page a distinct job. If an important URL changes, map the old address to its closest useful replacement. Keep working URLs where there is no reason to change them. Sending every old URL to the homepage leaves visitors without the information they expected.

For a large site, export the old URL inventory before migration. Search Console, the sitemap, analytics, and known links can each reveal pages that should be reviewed.

Define content responsibilities

Identify who will supply service details, write or approve copy, select photographs, and check business facts. Review the project’s geographic claims and response expectations. Content delays affect the launch just as much as technical work, so make dependencies explicit.

Check the customer journey

  • Read the main pages on a phone and at enlarged text sizes.
  • Use the menu and forms with a keyboard.
  • Test links, downloads, required fields, and understandable error messages.
  • Arrange an approved test inquiry and confirm receipt and delivery.
  • Check that plan or service selections reach the inquiry correctly.
  • Verify titles, descriptions, canonicals, sitemap entries, and indexing rules.

Launch with a record of what changed

Confirm the release, important redirects, and a recovery option before changing production. Keep a record of the launch date and major changes so later search and inquiry data can be interpreted in context. After launch, check the live pages and request indexing review through Search Console where appropriate.

Plan the handoff

Confirm who controls the accounts, how content is updated, and which subscriptions continue after launch. Agree on support responsibilities and any monthly time allowance. A website launch establishes the foundation; it does not finish every future SEO or content task.
